Golf Cart Batteries – Basic Maintenance Tips

Electric golf buggies are not only a smooth, quiet way to navigate around the golf course, they are also far more economical and cost-effective to run when compared to gas/petrol alternatives.  At ADH Golf & Utility Vehicles, we stock the best electric golf buggy brands available in Australia as well as a huge range of used golf cars. Take a look at our golf cart battery tips below, or visit our Perth store to learn more from our golf and utility vehicle experts.

How often do I need to recharge my golf cart batteries?

Put simply, every time you finish using your golf car, you should place the vehicle on-charge.  All modern golf carts are supplied with an automatic charger that will switch off when the batteries are fully charged so you don’t have to worry about ‘over-charging’ in most cases.  Without going into too much of the technicalities, the less time you charge the batteries at low Amps, the longer the battery set will last.  Regardless of the brand of golf cart you own, if you allow the batteries to run flat and then charge them up fully, you are reducing the overall life of the battery set, so topping the charge up after each use is going to greatly extend your battery life.

How can I prolong the battery life?

To get the longest life possible from your battery set, recharge the batteries after each use, as explained above.

Secondly (and just as importantly), ensure the battery cells have sufficient fluid.  If you don’t have an Automatic Battery Filling System fitted to your golf cart, simply remove the vent caps on each battery and ensure the battery plates are fully covered and top-up with Distilled Water if necessary.  Be careful not to overfill the cells, you only need around 5mm of water above the plates.

Thirdly, keep your batteries clean and free of corrosion. Dirt and dust that collects on top of your batteries will affect their performance, as will build-up on the battery terminals.  Simply use boiling water and a brush to clean the batteries and remove the acid build-up from the terminals.  Remember, you are dealing with corrosive substances so always make sure you wear hand and eye protection when carrying out battery maintenance.

What precautions do I need to take when charging?

Always ensure your charging area is well ventilated.  Whilst charging, batteries emit toxic gases that not only smell terrible, they’re also flammable.  Therefore, do not smoke or use tools that emit sparks or flames around a charging golf car.  A well ventilated shed or garage is the best option.
